What Is an Eggs Benedict?

Eggs Benedict is a favorite egg dish that was invented in New York City in the late 19th century. Although it’s debated exactly where in NYC it was developed, there is no doubt that it’s one of the most popular egg dishes in the world. Many chefs have adapted their own versions of this masterpiece, but a true Eggs Benedict consists of layers, from bottom to top, that include:

  • A toasted English muffin as the base
  • Canadian bacon
  • A poached egg
  • Hollandaise sauce
All these ingredients must be prepared and presented properly. An over-poached egg or a separated Hollandaise can ruin this timeless classic. For those of you who like to add a little panache, you can replace the Canadian bacon with smoked salmon. Then you have what’s called Eggs Royale. You can always skip the fancy sauce too and just go for poached egg toast that still satisfies your appetite and your protein needs.
